CÉGEP10 (coll. div. 1) game RECAP (3): Vanier close out tight victory over CNDF; Grasset outlasts Vieux Montréal to remain undefeated

Collège Montmorency Nomades (0) v.s Champlain College Lennoxville Cougars (36)
They may have struggled to get the pass attack in full gear, but that didn’t stop Champlain from running their way to a 36-0 blowout over Montmorency to improve their record to 3-0.

Félix Lussier-Roy was the linchpin on offence rushing for 138 yards on 16 carries with two touchdowns, which was a much needed performance with him gaining more yards by himself than the entire passing attack combined. Alek Boulianne also stepped up in a big way with six carries for 48 yards and a touchdown, while Jeremie Grace Kankolongo was quiet for the most part but still finished with a major amongst his five carries.

Really it was the defence who stole the show in this one with some massive individual displays, most notably being Charles-Lee Alaire Tardif, who ended up finding his way to the quarterback three times by the end of the game. CFC60 Williams Desgagné Sean Côté and Alec Poirier also recorded sacks throughout, while Jérémie Bérubé capped off the shutout effort with a pair of interceptions. Helping out in the yardage department on special teams was Dhandre Weekes and Sébastien Arsenault, who each racked up over 100 return yards on the day.

Nothing was going right for Montmorency in all three phases, but a few notable performances were put forth by Paul-Antoine Ouellette, who led the way with 41 yards on eight catches, and Laurent Sansalone, who finished with 56 yards on 10 carries.

Cégep Garneau Élans (17) v.s Cégep Limoilou Titans (27)
Garneau had some big plays that kept them alive in this one, but eventually Limoilou was able to pull away for a 27-17 win that now slots them into a logjam for second place.

The Titans used a three-headed approach in the backfield to frustrate their opponents with Phillippe Genest, Pier-Olivier Cadoret and Joel Paquet combining for 197 yards on 32 carries and a touchdown, which has been the key to their early success so far this season. Olivier Bamrounsavath also got the job done when he was called upon to throw the ball completing 16 passes for 195 yards and a touchdown strike to Tommy Prémont, and Tristan Rivard led the team with five receptions for 86 yards. The Defence also had a day limiting Garneau’s pass attack with Louis-Philippe Bélanger, Alexandre Tremblay, David-Alexandre Messier and Anthony Guay all recording a sack, while Charles-Alexandre Dépatie came up with an interception.

That disruption led to some problems moving the ball for the Élans, but they lived and died off the big play which is a dangerous way to compete. Guys like Raphaël Godbout, Émile Malenfant and Christophe Tremblay-Harnois tried their best, but there’s only so much you can if you’re not able to string together worthwhile drives.

Vanier College Cheetahs (19) v.s Campus Notre-Dame-de-Foy (18)
It came down to the wire between Vanier and CNDF, but once again the defending champions found themselves on the wrong side of the score box with Vanier inching by for a 19-18 victory.

The passing game for the Cheetahs was effective enough, but really it was the exploits of Darnel Jarrett that paved the way to victory. Jarrett finished with 125 yards on 10 carries with a touchdown nearly matching their passing totals, which was a joint attack led by Noah Craney and Daniel Sananes. The main threat in the aerial attack was Ryth-Jean Giraud, who finished with seven catches for 72 yards, while Nykolas Pierre-Masse chipped in with the only touchdown through the air. Nicholas De Francisco-Paul caused some issues up front on defence with a pair of sacks to his name, which was supplemented on the backend with a pair of interceptions by Xavier Ouellet and Jeremie Engelo.

CNDF came to compete and could have ended up on top if some plays broke their way, but still they need to find the offensive firepower that can match the play of their defence. They had multiple pivots take snaps once again with Philip Charpentier and Alexandre Naud splitting time, but still they couldn’t put up the necessary points to come away with the win. Naud was the more accurate of the two going 7/11 for 71 yards with one touchdown, while Vincent Carbonneau, Douglas Surf Biron and Alexandre Gailloux combined for 179 yards on 14 receptions with two touchdowns.

Cégep Lévis-Lauzon Faucons (53) v.s Cégep Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu Géants (23)
It was a total team effort for the red hot Faucons, who tore apart Saint-Jean along the ground and through the air for a 53-23 victory.

Yes, CFC60 Joanik Masse eclipsed the 250 yard mark once again on just 26 carries, plus he scored two touchdowns, but this win had a lot to do with some big plays from those around him. Philippe Plourde lost his mind for four quarters collecting 17 catches for 199 yards and a touchdown, meanwhile five other players caught one pass and nothing more. Plourde’s big day wouldn’t have been possible without the chemistry he formed with Adrien Guay, who completed 21/27 attempts for 227 yards and a touchdown, which he then matched with 74 yards and another major along the the ground. The final guy who spent some time in the spotlight was Louis-Pierre Nappert, who finished with three touchdowns on just 12 carries covering 111 yards.

For Saint-Jean it was all about collecting yards in huge chunks, but that’s never going to fly when you’re matched up against a team with the offensive weapons Lévis-Lauzon has to utilize. The good news was that Jesse Swennen threw for 257 yards and two touchdowns, but the downside was that came on just 13 completions when he threw the ball 32 times. He also had some effective plays in the running game with 63 yards on eight carries with a touchdown, while Edouard Arsenault led the team with six catches for 86 yards and two touchdowns.

Cégep du Vieux Montréal Spartiates (27) v.s Collège André-Grasset Phénix (35)
Vieux Montréal gave Grasset their first real test of the season, but still they couldn’t keep pace with the Phénix ending up on top 35-27.

No surprise here, but Jonathan Sénécal was once again a big reason why with 314 yards and four touchdowns, which brings his total to 11 through three games with the next closest pivot sitting at four. It was CFC60 François Rocheleau’s turn to lead the receiving unit with seven receptions for 128 yards and a touchdown, while Emilio Jaimes Leclair followed close behind with a touchdown of his own and six catches for 68 yards. CFC60 Kevin Mitale and Guillaume Ranger snagged the other two touchdowns, and Antoine Couture added another on a 66 yard romp that supplemented a great game by CFC60 Samuel Makwanda who finished with 19 carries for 110 yards.

The Spartiates put a good scare into Grasset and proved they should be a contender once the playoffs begin, and one the main reasons why is the play of Arnaud Desjardins under centre. Accuracy wasn’t his best friend in this one, but he still completed 16 passes for 234 yards with a touchdown pass to Jason Hovington, who has also proven to be a hot commodity with seven receptions for 91 yards. Another positive to take away was the play of Théodore Seaborn in the backfield, who was able to cause some damage with on 15 carries for 73 yards and a touchdown.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
