Carabins’ commits believe in coaches

The Carabins add two Québec commits to their 2019 class.

When it came down to it, CFC60 Mathieu Renault, a receiver from Collège Montmorency, and Thierry Bernier, an offensive lineman from Collège André-Grasset, put their faith in the University of Montréal coaches, and they will give the team their all when it’s their turn to see the field.

In his ten-year career, Mathieu Renault has grown to know quite a few players in Québec. “I chose to commit to the University of Montréal for many reasons. One of them is that I know a lot of guys on the team that I played with in the past and this made me feel at home,” he said. “Also, I want to play for a winning team with a great history.”

During his cégep career, Renault played with Les Nomades du Collège Montmorency (RSEQ Division 2). He said that some of the Carabins’ coaches coached him while with Les Nomades and that he liked to work with them. “I felt like the coaches believe in me and I think that it’s the best coaching staff that can help me develop as a man and (as a) football player,” he added.

Renault, who is 6’2, 203lbs, will be taking civil engineering. Before joining Les Nomades, he spent two years with Les Vikings de Laval-Nord in his hometown of Laval, Québec. He then spent four years with his high school team, Les Loups de Curé-Antoine Labelle (RSEQ). He won a Bol d’Or with Les Loups in 2014.

Thierry Bernier

When looking at universities, Thierry Bernier decided not to stray far from home. Hailing from St-Eustache, Québec, he said he chose Montréal because he can stay near his family and friends. “I also chose it because I believe in the offensive lineman coach and I’m sure he can bring me to another level. I knew (him) from Team Québec in 2016,” he said.

“I think the coaching staff is amazing,” he added. “Even with the changes they made, I’m sure they will be a great group for every player.”

At a towering 6’3, 265lbs, Bernier has seen his fair share of teams. He spent three years with Les Lions de Deux-Montagne, five with Les Empereurs du Collège Letendre (RSEQ high school) and three with Les Phénix du Collège André-Grasset (RSEQ Division 1). In 2014 he won a silver medal at the Spalding Cup and was named to the first all-star team. He was also a two-time best lineman of the year with Letendre in 2015 and 2016.

Bernier is interested in taking human relations.
