Cancellation of game between Carabins, Concordia due to illness

RSEQ makes its decision following the cancellation of the university football match planned between the Stingers and the Carabins

Montreal, October 5, 2017 – After several discussions between the University of Montreal Carabins, the Concordia Stingers and the RSEQ (Quebec Student Sport Network) surrounding the gastroenteritis situation involving the team University of Montreal Carabins, the network decided to cancel the match involving these two teams.

Since Wednesday morning, several student-athletes and staff members of the Carabins football team at the University of Montreal have been experiencing symptoms of a gastroenteritis virus. Following the recommendations of the medical team of the Carabins of the University of Montreal and the public health of Montreal, it was agreed between the parties involved, namely the Carabins of the University of Montreal, the Stingers of Concordia University and the RSEQ, Wednesday evening, to cancel the game involving both teams this Thursday October 5.

According to the hearing of the two parties and the public health position of MontrĆ©al, the RSEQ concludes that this situation is a case of force majeure and that it meets the criteria set out in the rules for the cancellation of ” a part.

The UniversitƩ de MontrƩal Carabins had proposed a postponement of the game, which would take place on Monday night, but due to several circumstances, the Concordia Stingers could not engage in this proposal. This exceptional situation meant that the Concordia Stingers found themselves stuck in this problem because they had to face very short deadlines and the fact that the majority of student-athletes and the staff have engaged in travel outside of the province. It would not have been possible to resume the game later than Monday, as this would have caused significant security and rest time for both teams, as they have games on Saturday, October 14th.

“The decision is supported by the desire to ensure a safe environment for student-athletes and the staff accompanying their teams and is consistent with the safety objectives of the network,” said Gustave Roel, President and CEO of RSEQ.

Considering that this leads to a disparity in the number of matches played, the ranking system becomes inequitable for the other teams of the league. Consequently, the final classification of the regular season will be determined by calculating the coefficient between the total of games won and the total of matches played. In the event of a tie in the standings, the current tie-break shall apply as such.
