Canadian Junior Football League (CJFL) player sanctioned two years for cocaine

The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) announced that Jake Glass, a Canadian Junior Football League (CJFL) player, has received a two-year sanction for an anti-doping rule violation. The violation occurred during in-competition doping control on September 11, 2010 and resulted from the athlete’s urine sample returning an adverse analytical finding for cocaine, cannabis and methylhexaneamine. All three substances are banned in-competition by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List.

The CCES notified Mr. Glass of the violation, but he did not engage in the process at any point. Under the rules of the Canadian Anti-Doping Program (CADP), a hearing was conducted in his absence. Arbitrator Carol Roberts found that “… as Mr. Glass has not provided any evidence to support the finding of an exceptional circumstance, I am bound to impose the sanction of a two-year period of ineligibility…” ending October 15, 2012. A copy of the decision can be found on the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada website at [url]www.sdrcc.ca.

“It is always disappointing when an athlete chooses not to engage in the process,” said Paul Melia, President and CEO of the CCES. “The CADP is expressly designed to protect athletes’ rights and to ensure that they have a voice and a place to be heard. We make every effort to try to engage them in the process.”

Mr. Glass’ sanction prevents him from participating in any capacity in any competition or in any sport-related activity, including training with teammates, authorized or organized by an organization that has adopted the CADP or has agreed to comply with the CADP.

The CCES is an independent, national, non-profit organization. Our mission, to foster ethical sport for all Canadians, is carried out through research, promotion, education, detection and deterrence, as well as through programs and partnerships with other organizations.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
