Georgia Stateā€™s historic inaugural game is less than three weeks away as the Panthers open their first season by hosting Shorter on Thursday, Sept. 2 at 7:30 p.m. at the Georgia Dome.

ā€œThe team is always excited when we practice in the Dome but a little tense, and that was the case today,ā€ said head coach Bill Curry.

ā€œWe played reasonably well defensively, and we showed flashes on offense with one really good drive,ā€ he continued. ā€œBut what we havenā€™t come to is consistency. I suppose if I expected consistency after 11 practices when so many of these guys had never seen each other before, then I would be unreasonable, but I intend to be unreasonable in that regard.ā€

Curry noted the play of a few individuals on defense, including junior college transfer Christo Bilukidi on the defensive line. Bilukidi, a 6-5, 265-pounder from Ottawa, Ontario who played at Eastern Arizona J.C., managed to get into the offensive backfield several times.

ā€œChristo Bilukidi is going to be a fine player,ā€ said Curry. ā€œJake and Louie Muasau are always evident all over the field. We had some excellent plays made in the secondary today, especially by Brandon Jones. So we are coming along in various phases of our game.ā€

Redshirt freshman safety Parker Stevens ended the scrimmage by grabbing an interception during the two-minute segment.

The Panthers also spent considerable time Saturday working on all phases of special teams. One of the highlights of the Dome workout was a punt return for a touchdown by freshman Demarius Matthews from McEachern High in Powder Springs.

ā€œWe spent an awful lot of time on special times today, and weā€™re getting better than all of them,ā€ said Curry. ā€œI think we can be a real threat on special teams.ā€

After a day off from practice on Sunday, the Panthers will be back on the field with single workouts Monday, Wednesday and Friday, sandwiched around two-a-days on Tuesday and Thursday.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
