Canada West Football Players of the Week 3

OFFENCE: Mark McConkey, WR, Regina
Third-year wide receiver Mark McConkey set career highs in both receptions (13) and receiving yards (154) during the University of Regina Rams’ 37-26 win over Saskatchewan on Saturday night in Regina.

Over half of quarterback Marc Mueller’s 25 completions were to McConkey, including a six-yard touchdown reception early in the second quarter that gave Regina the lead.
McConkey is just the fourth Canada West player since 1981 to have at least 13 receptions in a single game. The Canada West and University of Regina record is held by Chad Goldie, who had 15 catches at Alberta on Sept. 8, 2007.
McConkey leads Canada West with 19 receptions on the season and ranks fifth in the conference with 203 receiving yards.
DEFENCE: Tye Noble, CB, Calgary
Third-year defensive back Tye Noble was having an impressive outing for the first 54 minutes of Saturday’s Canada West football contest at Alberta, but he’ll be remembered for the game-winning score with just six minutes left.
Noble had posted most of his 7.5 tackles on the afternoon – seven of which were solos, with the shared tackle also a sack of Alberta quarterback Julian Marchand – when the Calgary defence took the field after the Dinos had marched down the field to bring the score within two points. On the first offensive play by the No. 7 Golden Bears, a Marchand pass deflected off the outstretched hand of a receiver and into the waiting arms of the Winnipeg-born Noble, who had clear daylight 45 yards into the end zone to put Calgary up for good.
Noble currently sits third in the conference with 19.5 tackles. The No. 4-ranked Dinos (2-1) take their roadshow east this weekend to face the 1-2 Manitoba Bisons Saturday afternoon in Winnipeg.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Aaron Ifield, P/K, Calgary
Fifth-year kicker Aaron Ifield moved into top spot on the University of Calgary’s all-time scoring list in Saturday’s 23-14 win over Alberta at Foote Field.
With his 31-yard field goal early in the second quarter, Ifield passed Bruce Parsons’ (1991-94) school record of 274 points. He added two more field goals on the day from 23 and 25 yards, the latter of which iced the victory for the Dinos late in the fourth quarter.
Ifield improved his school record to 59 field goals, good for third all-time on the Canada West career list, while his scoring total of 281 points puts him in fourth place on the conference leaderboard.
The fifth-year Arts student also won the punting battle against Alberta’s Hugh O’Neill Saturday, averaging 36.7 yards on a day where wind was a significant factor.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
