OTTAWA – Johnny Mark, a fifth-year kicker from the University of Calgary, became the all-time leading scorer in CIS football history on Thursday night as the nationally top-ranked Dinos improved to 3-0 on the season with a dominating 80-18 win over visiting Alberta.
The science student from Peterborough, Ont., entered the contest with 422 career points, good for a tie atop the CIS list with fellow kicker Lirim Hajrullahu, a standout at Western University from 2009 to 2013 who now stars in the CFL with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Mark passed Hajrullahu with an extra point just 2:29 in and finished the game with 10 converts, three field goals and a kickoff single to score 20 points in total, pushing the new national record to 442.
Mark now has his sights set on the CIS career field goal record. He currently holds the Canada West conference standard with 75, good for fourth place on the CIS list and nine shy of the national mark set last fall by McMaster’s Tyler Crapigna, now a member of the Calgary Stampeders.
Mark, a 2014 draft pick of the Saskatchewan Roughriders (third round – 20th overall) who attended the Ottawa Redblacks’ training camp this summer after being traded earlier this year, still has five regular season games left with the Dinos to add to his impressive career totals. Calgary’s next confrontation is set for Sept. 26 at Regina.
