(Ottawa, Ontario ā April 15, 2019) ā The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) announced today that Grant McDonald, a U SPORTS football athlete affiliated with the University of Calgary, received a 10-month sanction for an anti-doping rule violation. The athleteās urine sample, collected during in-competition doping control on November 3, 2018, revealed the presence of Higenamine, a prohibited beta-2 agonist.
Higenamine is classified as a āspecified substanceā on the Prohibited List. Under the rules of the Canadian Anti-Doping Program (CADP), an athlete facing a first violation involving a āspecified substanceā will be given a proposed sanction based on the CCESās assessment of the athlete’s degree of fault.
In response to the CCESās notification of the adverse analytical finding, Mr. McDonald admitted the violation in a timely fashion (in accordance with CADP rule 10.11.2), and a hearing was held to determine the sanction length. Arbitrator Patrice Brunet confirmed the violation and imposed a sanction of 10 months ineligibility from sport, ending September 2, 2019. During the sanction period, the athlete, who resides in Calgary, AB, is ineligible to participate in any capacity with any sport signatory to the CADP, including training with teammates, except where permitted in accordance with CADP Rule 10.12.2.
