BREAKING: Mackey moves on as head coach

SHERBROOKE, Que. – Kevin Mackey announced Sunday that he will not return as head football coach of the Bishop’s University Gaiters for the 2017 season.

Mackey leaves after his fifth season at the helm of the Gaiters.  The Ascot Corner, Que. native was appointed head coach in January of 2012. After a rough 2012 campaign where the Gaiters finished winless, in 2013 he guided Bishop’s to their best finish in 20 years, amassing a 6-2 record and hosting a home playoff game for the first time since 1994. Mackey was named CIS Coach of the Year following that campaign.

The following years saw the Gaiters attempt to rebuild and struggle in the daunting RSEQ.  Mackey posted records of 1-7, 1-7 and 1-7 in the three most recent years.

“I am genuinely grateful for the opportunity I was given to lead the Bishop’s Gaiters Football team,” said Mackey. “As I reflect on the past five years, I am proud to have made a lasting impression and to have been part of something very special.

“Having grown increasingly frustrated with the overall conditions and continued leadership turbulence at Bishop’s University, I am choosing to leave on good terms.  I will deeply miss the players, coaches, alumni, support staff and many others.  It was a joy to coach the players who proudly wore the Gaiter uniform week after week, stood side by side, never gave up and continued to improve despite a sometimes difficult landscape.  I am confident the future is bright for these young men, both on and off the field. I wish to convey a very personal and public thank you to the players and all the best to the Bishop’s Gaiters football program moving forward.”

“Kevin’s hard work and dedication over the last nine years first as an assistant then as head coach of the Bishop’s Gaiters football team was unparalleled and extremely appreciated. We wish him all the best in his future endeavours,” said Joey Sabo, Associate Athletic Director at Bishop’s University. “We will start the process immediately to find the next head coach of our storied football program.”

The Gaiters wrapped up their season on Saturday with a 39-6 loss to the Concordia Stingers.
