Brannagan shows other QBs the way

If quarterback Danny Brannagan does not crack the Toronto Argonauts roster following training camp, the club may want to bring him on as a coach.

After the first practice at the Argos’ rookies and quarterbacks mini-camp on Wednesday, the Americans competing with Brannagan for the starter’s job admitted they have asked the Queen’s University product to help them adjust to the Canadian game.

“When we first arrived, that was the first question I had,” said Cleo Lemon, who has served as a backup in the NFL for most of his career. “I was like, ‘Danny you got to give me some pointers … what kind of trajectory do you put on the ball? What kind of timing do you have?’ And he’s been real helpful for me. I’ve definitely leaned on him for information.”

Dalton Bell, former Heisman Trophy finalist Ken Dorsey and former NFL backups Lemon and Gibran Hamdan are all vying for the starting job.

The size of the Canadian field is something Lemon is still getting familiar with.

“When you come out here you just see how big the field is … that’s definitely the first thing you notice,” said Lemon, who started a handful of games for the Miami Dolphins in 2007. “The field is a lot wider so you have a lot of room to make plays and I think that’s an advantage for the offence, but at the same time you got to get used to it.”
