Boise State football team secures commitment from Canadian safety

Boise State’s football team has secured its seventh commitment for the Class of 2011 — 6-foot-3, 195-pound Canadian safety Taylor Loffler.

Loffler committed to the Broncos on Tuesday, he told the Idaho Statesman.

“I really liked the school, they have a really good team and I really liked the coaches,” Loffler said. “It was a pretty easy decision.”

Loffler also had an offer from Oregon State, he said.

Loffler, a right-hander, plays quarterback and safety at Kelowna Secondary in British Columbia.

The Broncos have enjoyed success with several Canadian players in recent years, including offensive linemen Andrew Woodruff (British Columbia) and Jon Gott (Alberta), linebacker Josh Bean (Alberta) and defensive end Mike G. Williams (Alberta). Current defensive linemen Michael Atkinson (Ontario) and Tyrone Crawford (Ontraio) also hail from north of the border.

“I have heard in the past they’ve had some pretty successful Canadians, but that didn’t influence my decision of where to go,” Loffler said.

He is the Broncos’ seventh commitment for the Class of 2011 confirmed by the Idaho Statesman. Commitments are non-binding. Players can sign letters of intent in February.

UPDATE 5:51 p.m. — I just got off the phone with Loffler’s coach at Kelowna Secondary, Ray Anderson.

Anderson said Loffler is “easily the hardest-working kid on our football team. He’s one of those guys that kind of leads by example. He sets a tone, whether it’s in practice or any kind of drill. He’s always the guy setting the pace.”

Anderson said Loffler is a “special” player that could play just about any position.
