Bishop’s renews Mackey’s contract

SHERBROOKE – The Bishop’s University Department of Athletics and Recreation is pleased to announce that they have agreed to terms with head football coach Kevin Mackey on a new multi-year contract.

Mackey, an Ascot Corner, Quebec native became the Gaiters ninth head coach in the modern era on January 16, 2012. Earlier today he signed an extension that will keep him at the helm of the purple and silver for years to come.

The 2012 season came to a close much faster than the Gaiters would have liked as they missed the playoffs. Despite the disappointment Bishop’s was able to draw on some positives including having two players named to the RSEQ all-star team, and one earning the Russ Jackson award nomination from the conference. As a team they put together a two game winning streak in September where they played some quality football.

“It is an honour and a privilege to be leading this program,” said Mackey. “We have a great nucleus of young men returning which is a tremendous. I am extremely pleased to have the opportunity to work with our university, alumni and student athletes. They are all great people.”

“What Kevin was able to do in his first year was a positive step forward,” said Brian Breckles, Director of Athletics and Recreation at Bishop’s. “We have put a plan in place with numerous goals as we move forward. I believe that Kevin is the right person to help lead our program.”

Mackey and his coaching staff are in the midst of recruiting as they look to find quality student athletes to help the Gaiters in the years to come.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
