BCFC week 3 in review (CJFL)

After week three in the BCFC only one team remains undefeated. The Okanagan Sun collected their biggest win in the last number of years, beating the two-time defending champion Vancouver Island Raiders 27-19. The loss snapped their 25 game winning streak, which was started after a loss to the Sun in August 2008; nine days shy of exactly two years.

The 3-0 Sun were led by their quarterback Bobby Davis who was under pressure all night, but somehow was able to throw 15 of 25 for 302 yards and two touchdowns. Davis used his feet to give his receivers an opportunity to get open against the Raiders defence and buy more time. He would officially rush five times for 40 yards, but it was his ability to scramble that was most impressive.
2008 All-Canadian receiver Matt Scheurwater had a big night catching seven balls for 124 yards and a touchdown, while Mark Hester came off the bench for three catches and 56 yards. The other touchdown reception was made by Tore Tarcon on a nifty flip by Davis who was being hauled down, that went for 42 yards. Tarcon also led the Sun in rushing with 14 carries for 51 yards and had a touchdown, while Daniel Xavier had two runs for five yards.
On special teams, Steve Shott was 2-3, hitting from 38 and 43 yards out. Tynan Pearce blocked a punt. The Sun defence, bent but didn’t break towards the end of the game as the Raiders
were threatening but couldn’t find the end zone. They would force seven turnovers, two interceptions, one fumble and four on downs. Wyatt Smith and Mitch Wolsey came up with picks, while DarcyWhittaker jumped on a fumble. The defence also batted down seven balls.
The 2-1 Vancouver Island Raiders found themselves on the losing end of a football game for the first time in 25 games, which included two national championships, one national semi final, two BCFC Cullen Cups and four BCFC semi finals.
Quarterback Jordan Yantz went to the air 52 times and finished 29 of 52 for 365 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. His 29 completions set a new BCFC record and his 52 attempts is now third most in a BCFC game. His favourite target was Michael Schaper who had 10 catches for 137 yards and scored one touchdown. His 10 receptions set a new Raiders team record. Andrew Smith caught nine balls for 113 yards and a touchdown while Whitman Tomusiak had eight catches for 91 yards.
Without Andrew Harris and a couple of key offensive lineman the Raiders were held to just 56 yards on the ground. The reining BCFC Offensive Player of the Week Jordan Botel carried six times for 44 yards, while Yantz rumbled for 11 yards on two carries.
The Raiders “D” forced four turnovers on Saturday night as Prashant Chaube, Nick Woznesensky and Quinton Clarke picked up fumbles. Ranji Atwall had another outstanding game making four tackles, forced a fumble and recorded an interception. Walker Morrison led the Raiders with five tackles.
