Alouettes Trestman one of three final candidates for Miami Hurricane job

CORAL GABLES β€” The University of Miami’s search for a football coach could soon be over.
The Miami Herald reported on its website Friday evening that UM has narrowed its sights to three finalists: Connecticut’s Randy Edsall, Temple’s Al Golden and Marc Trestman, coach of the Canadian Football League’s Montreal Alouettes.

Of the three, Edsall is the most highly regarded in college football circles. Edsall, 52, was named co-Big East coach of the year this week after leading Connecticut to its first Big East championship and a Fiesta Bowl berth against Oklahoma on New Year’s Day.

Edsall is believed to have told Miami Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt in New York this week that he wants to remain with the Huskies through the team’s bowl game if he accepts the position.
Golden, 41, took over a Temple program in 2006 that combined for a 3-31 record in the three seasons before his hiring. He led the Owls to records of 9-4 and 8-4 the past two seasons. A former Virginia defensive coordinator under Al Groh, Golden has been seen as a possible successor to Joe Paterno at Penn State. Golden was a tight end for the Nittany Lions from 1989-91.

Trestman was a UM assistant from 1981-84 and tutored quarterback Bernie Kosar during the Hurricanes’ first national championship in 1983.

Trestman, 54, has worked mostly in the pro ranks, putting in time as an NFL assistant from 1985 to 2004. He has served as the Alouettes’ coach for the past three years, leading the team to a Grey Cup championship in 2009 and 2010.

Trestman is reported to remain close with Kosar, who one source said has been deeply involved in UM’s coaching search.
