AKO moves home games to U of W

The University of Windsor and AKO took a step towards forging tighter links Tuesday by announcing the Fratmen football team will move their OFC home games to Alumni Field.

“It is important for us to strengthen the relationship with AKO and I believe this will definitely help in that regard,” Lancers head football coach Mike Morencie said.

“It is our hope that players feel comfortable enough that, when they are finished their junior eligibility, they will feel positive about the possibility of moving on to the university level. Playing in the same stadium will certainly help with that transition.”

The Fratmen, who have traditionally played at Windsor Stadium, will play their home opener against the Ottawa Sooners Aug. 2. They also play host to the Hamilton Hurricanes Sept. 4.

AKO will then kick off a London-Windsor doubleheader Sep. 18 against the London Beefeaters at noon before the University of Windsor Lancers open their 2010 OUA regular season against the Western Mustangs at 7 p.m.

The Fratmen complete their home schedule against the Brampton Bears Sept. 25 at 7:30 p.m.

AKO president Darren Cocchetto feels the move not only strengthens the bonds between the two programs, but it also enhances the game-day experiences for the Fratmen and their fans.

“The (move) will allow our athletes to play in one of Canada’s newest and most modern football stadiums,” Cocchello said.

“At the same time, it allows us to work closer together with Lancer football to help improve the development of both football programs.

“We also believe that all of our fans will have an enhanced game-day experience at Alumni Field.”
