Ahtahkakoop Titans and Creighton Kodiaks take the 2019 Ralph Pilz Trophies

It was a beautiful fall Saturday on October 19 for football. At noon, the Ahtahkakoop Titans and Senator Myles Venne Huskies (SMVS) from the Lac La Ronge Indian Band battled for the Tier 2 Championship and the Ralph Pilz Trophy. This game was a hard hitting affair and was close at the first half with the Titans holding a 13 point lead. Jonah McKenzie and Virgil Bear led the Huskies with two touchdowns each. However, the Titans leader, Skyler Nayneecassum was the difference in the match scoring four touchdowns and helped the Ahtahkakoop team pull away in the second half. The final score was 60-33 for Ahtahkakoop. Each of these teams had a fantastic season.

Later in the day, the Creighton Kodiaks and Cumberland House Islanders kicked off their championship Tier 1 game. The Cumberland House squad was looking for their third consecutive Ralph Pilz Trophy having been unbeaten in the last three seasons including defeating the Kodiaks in Cumberland House a few weeks earlier.

The teams did not disappoint the fans that had gathered at the Max Clunie Field. League leading scorer, Kaydin Chaboyer opened the scoring with a touchdown and convert on Cumberland’s first possession. The Kodiaks responded with their leading scorer,, Blake Alexander with his own touchdown and convert, setting the tone for a close, hard fought game. At halftime, the teams were tied at 24 points each. In the third quarter, Bowen Stewart scored a touchdown for the Islanders and Blake Alexander responded once again with a touchdown as well, leaving the game tied after three quarters at 32. In the fourth quarter, the Cumberland House Islanders had the lead but also had a few players down with injury and had a short bench. The hero of the game for the Creighton Kodiaks was #85 Aidan Collard who tied the game with 3:49 remaining. With only 26 seconds left on the clock, Collard managed to get behind the Cumberland defense and caught a pass on a flee flicker type of play, scoring the game winning touchdown. Cumberland House were unable to respond as the clock ran out. Final score was Creighton 46 Cumberland House 38. This may have been the best game ever played for a northern championship.

Northern Saskatchewan Football is incredibly proud of all their teams. Looking forward to the provincial semi finals next Saturday, the Creighton Kodiaks will be hosting the Birch Hills Marauders. The Cumberland House Islanders will be travelling to Hafford to play the 2018 Provincial champions. We wish both teams safe travels and best of luck as they pursue a provincial championship.
