Ottawa running back joins AUS team’s 2016 class.

Acadia Axemen have announced the addition of Daniel Obiang to their football program.

Obiang, the 5’10, 235 pound running back from Ottawa, Ontario will join the team for the 2016 AUS season.

“Danny Obiang is a great back and brings power and speed to the Acadia backfield,” commented Axemen Head Coach Jeff Cummins.  “Our Ottawa connections continue through Assistant Head Coach Pete Fraser, who handles the majority of recruiting.”

“Once again, we have secured one of our very best recruiting classes and are very excited to know that Danny will be carrying the mail for the next four to five years. We look forward to seeing him don the new Acadia uniform in 2016 and are excited to have his entire family out to games.”

Recently, Obiang completed a stint with Canada Prep Raiders.  Previous to the Raiders, the #CFC100 has suited up for both the Gloucester South Raiders of the National Capital Amateur Football Association (NCAFA) and Cumberland Panthers of the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL).

The offensive standout has received several honours including Raiders Rookie of the Year, NCAFA All-Star selection, NCAFA East Game MVP as well as two OVFL All-Star nods.

Overall, the strength of both the academic and athletic programs were appealing to Obiang.  Moreover, the reputation and atmosphere surrounding the Wolfville, Nova Scotia campus played a significant role in his decision.

“Acadia University is an amazing school with a great football program and a great football tradition,” elaborated Obiang,  “I chose to enrol at Acadia because it was the best fit for me academically and athletically.”

“I was very excited after I met the other football players. Their collegiality and welcoming attitude as well as the small community environment of the campus made me feel at home right away. Furthermore, I believe Acadia really cares about their football program as a brand new locker room and weight room very comparable to those of many top programs in the country were recently built. From an academic point of view, Acadia offers great kinesiology courses.”

Moreover, the #CFC100 recruit wanted to extend the existing bonds he built with the Axemen coaching staff and in particular is looking forward to the opportunity to work with new Axemen Offensive Coordinator Luigi Costanzo.

“I also chose Acadia because Coach Cummis did an excellent job building a relationship with myself as well as with my parents,” expressed the running back.   “I was also very happy to hear about the naming of the new Offensive Coordinator, Coach Luigi Costanzo, who I have a tremendous amount of respect for, as he’s coached many good running backs who have succeeded under his mentorship.”

“I truly see myself working with him for the next four years. I can’t wait to start this new chapter in my life by learning everyday and working hard on and off the field.”
