A look back in history at four of the best ever CFL player

The CFL has played a massive part in the sporting landscape of Canada. No longer is the nation known for its ice hockey, curling or baseball. In fact, the CFLā€™s reputation around the world continues to grow.

Itā€™ll be hard for the CFL to surpass the NFL in terms of popularity – anyone thinking it can is probably kidding themselves – but much like there are alternative options in soccer to Englandā€™s Premier League or attractive options alongside other popular leagues from other sports, suggests there is an appetite for other leagues in other countries. The CFL certainly falls into that category and over the years fans of it certainly haven’t been left disappointed.

Perhaps the biggest concern for many, though, is the hope that Canada can keep producing stars of their own. Itā€™s no secret that people are exercising less in todayā€™s modern world, with mobile games like the Halloween Fortune slot game which you try in practice mode at casino.com/ca, the likes of Fortnite and other such sedentary lifestyle offerings keeping kids hooked for hours on end, alongside other hugely popular creations like the Nintendo Switch. As a result, there is a concern that the talent simply wonā€™t come through and the CFL could suffer as a result.

Weā€™ve certainly been spoilt in the past, though. CFL players of old arguably helped shape the league it is today. So, with that in mind, and in an attempt to hopefully inspire the next generation to come through, we thought weā€™d highlight some of the best ever CFL players to play the game and hammer home just how great a career in the sport can be.

Damon Allen

Damon Allen had an illustrious career playing in Canada for the Edmonton Eskimos, Ottawa Rough Riders, Hamilton Tiger-Cats, BC Lions and the Toronto Argonauts. Arguably best known for being the second all-time passing yards leader in the CFL behind Anthony Calvillo with 72,381 yards, Allen played a humongous 370 games during his career in the country too, making him third on the list in terms of CFL appearances. A quarterback with clear ability, Damon Allen is one of the greatest weā€™ve seen in his position.

Anthony Calvillo

We touched on Anthony Calvillo briefly above, but he deserves far more of a mention. The current assistant head coach for the Montreal Carabins football team, Calvillo is the CFL’s all-time passing leader ahead of Damon Allen with 79,816 yards. Playing for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Montreal Alouettes, quarterback Calvillo also managed to win three Grey Cups. If you know any young quarterbacks out there wanting to perfect their game, then itā€™s probably best to sit them down and show them some clips of Anthony Calvillo.

Milt Stegall

We had to end on Milt Stegall; a player who is the CFL’s all-time leading receiver with 15,153 yards, has scored the most touchdowns in CFL history (147), and also holds the record for scoring the most touchdowns in one season, with 23. A Winnipeg Blue Bombers legend, Milt Stegall was a joy to watch.

Doug Flutie

Yes, we know – yet another quarterback, but we simply couldnā€™t leave Doug Flutie off the list despite the fact he only played eight seasons in the CFL. Despite that, he goes down as arguably the best player ever. Playing for the likes of the BC Lions, Calgary Stampeders and the Toronto Argonauts, Flutie was always a key man for his team and holds the record for passing yards in a season with 6,619.

Get practising, kids.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
