2018 Team Preview (AB): Coaching experience to benefit Joane Cardinal-Schubert Ravens in first year

The Joane Cardinal-Schubert Ravens are a new football team out of Calgary, Alberta. This yearā€™s team will be playing with mainly grade tens and elevens playing as a senior team in Division 3.

ā€We fully expect to start moving up in year 2,ā€ said Coach Zach McNeil of the newly formed Ravens.

McNeil played high school football in Ontario before moving to Acadia University where he played four years as a wide receiver. McNeil then moved to Calgary where he has coached at Western Canada High School and Churchill/Bowness. Heā€™s also had several stints as a guest coach with the Calgary Colts and Football Alberta evaluation camps.

ā€œOne of the greatest challenges of putting together a new football team is to get both the student athletes and the coaches who are coming from many different schools and programs onto the same page very quickly,ā€ said McNeil. ā€œAfter our spring camp though, I have found this group to be very willing to learn and are very excited to set the tone for our program.ā€

With the Ravens being a new team, they donā€™t have any rivalries yet, but Coach McNeil mentioned that there is another brand new school that will be opening up not far from where the Ravens are which could turn out to be a rival school for them. Coach replied, ā€œIt is early though and this may or may not end up happening.ā€

This season McNeil expects his team to rely heavily on their grade elevens with the expectation that some of their incoming grade tens will need to play significant roles right away.

In their first season of football in 2018, Coach McNeil expects his squad to compete at the top of Calgaryā€™s division 3.

The Ravens offense will depend greatly on their collective skill set. Coach McNeil explained, ā€œI anticipate we will run gun/2 back/3×1 receivers as our base with some 4 x 1 or potentially 3 x 2 if we find that our athletes warrant it.ā€

Defensively, the Joane Cardinal-Schubert Ravens will be a 4-3 formation running primarily cover 3.

ā€œWe are very excited to be starting this program in the 2018 season,ā€ responded McNeil. Ā ā€œWe have a terrific coaching staff with a plethora of experience at every level of Canadian Football and fully expect to start moving quickly up the ladder of Calgary High School football.ā€
