2016 WHSFL Senior Bowl: Team Miller wins tight battle

The Winnipeg High School Football League’s Senior Bowl kicked off at 1 p.m Satuday afternoon at Investors Group Field. Ε¦eam Bramwell met Team Miller on a cloudy afternoon with some surprises. It was the first time that Investors Group Field hosted the event after it was held at the Kildonan East Reivers field last year.

At the end of the first quarter the score was 2-0 for team Miller after two missed field goals. Both teams struggled to find their offensive rhythm most of the game because of the intensity of the defense, and a few errors.

With 2:22 remaining in the third quarter Oak Park’s Niko Di Fonte blasted a 40 yard field goal that had good enough air for 50 yards and team Bramwell led 3-2. This was the only time that team Bramwell had the lead all afternoon as Miller capitalized on an error later.

Christian Phillips of the Garden City Gophers picked up a fumbled punt snap and the lone touchdown of the day was scored for team Miller, they were up 9-3. It was the Marcel Arruda Welch and Tommy Semchyshyn day for the maroon team. On a couple of occasions there was a botched snap, and Semchyshyn (St.Paul’s) managed to elude defenders for a chunk of yards. Arruda Welch (Garden City) was all over the field whether it was returning punts or running the ball, he was even put in at quarterback too.

Team Bramwell had some excitement on their sidelines as well. Keenan Onyebuchi was entertaining almost every time he had the ball. Onyebuchi thrilled fans when he jumped over a standing defender. Keenan was joking after the game when asked what advice he had for next year’s seniors, β€œDo better than Marcel Arruda Welch” replied Onyebuchi.

I talked to Tommy Semchyshyn about being named the game’s offensive MVP for his team. Tommy said, β€œIt was a huge honor, I thought it was really unexpected, I thought a lot of guys made some plays on the offensive side of the ball.”

The score at the end of the day remained 9-3. A victory was earned by Team Miller Saturday afternoon and that ends that chapter of football for these seniors of the Winnipeg High School Football League.

After the game, Wade Miller was glad to be a part of the event. Wade mentioned, β€œIt was great to see the seniors play their last high school game here and it was great to be a part of that.” Miller was also part of the senior bowl when he played for Sturgeon Heights Huskies. β€œI remember playing in this game having coach Ritchie as my coach at the time, and then playing for him, so yea a lot of fond memories of this event,” concluded Miller.
