2011 flag football national championship coming to Nova Scotia

Ottawa, ON – Football Canada is proud to announce that Football Nova Scotia will host the 2011 Flag Football National Championships (FFNC) at Dalhousie University in Halifax from July 22 to July 25th, 2011. The FFNC is an annual event which brings together the best youth flag football players to represent their province on a National level.

This year, in accordance with the growth of flag football and the development of Football Canadaā€™s
Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) program, the FFNC has modified its previous under-15 co-ed division to separate male and female under-16 divisions. The under- 16 (U16) divisions supplement the pre-existing U18 female and male divisions. Each division will be highly competitive as Provincial champions compete for a chance to be crowned the National champion.

ā€œWe are very excited about hosting this prestigious event and showcasing the top flag football athletes from across Canada,ā€ said Karen Ouellette, Executive Director of Football Nova Scotia. ā€œFlag football makes an important contribution in the development of youth in Nova Scotia.ā€

Last yearā€™s event was hosted by the Ontario Football Alliance at Carleton University in early August to coincide with the IFAF Flag Football World Championships. Manitoba is the defending gold medalist in the U15 M division as they defeated Ontario by a score of 26 to 13. Ontario and QuĆ©bec split the U18 medal games in 2010. Ontario captured the gold medal in the U18 Female division with a close fought 7 to 6 win over QuĆ©bec, while in the U18 Male division QuĆ©bec won by a final score of 13 to 6.

This yearā€™s tournament will build additional momentum in the province as Football Nova Scotia hosted a successful 2010 Football Canada Cup in Wolfville, Nova Scotia at Acadia University.

The Provincial Flag Football Season for U16 and U18 Divisions run from the end of April until early July, the dates within these months varies between Provincial Sport Organizationā€™s (PSOā€™s). Each PSO will hold Provincial Championships for the selection of their Provincial team(s).
